Apple’s macOS 27 Debuts June 8 With Siri Overhaul, Touch Interface, and Intel Mac Cutoff

Cupertino, CA – Apple will officially unveil macOS 27 during its WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday, June 8, marking the next major update for Mac users. The developer beta drops immediately after the keynote, with a public beta expected in July and a full release to all users in September.

The software—codenamed internally but not yet publicly named—will bring a dedicated Siri app with conversation history, a touch-optimized interface for rumored touchscreen Macs, and a firm cutoff for Intel-based Macs. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed on an earnings call this week: “We look forward to bringing a more personalized Siri to users coming this year.”

Siri Upgrades

macOS 27 will ship with a dedicated Siri app that stores conversation history, positioning it as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. The update also finally delivers the personalized Siri features previewed at WWDC 2024—such as asking about a mother’s flight and lunch reservation by pulling data from Mail and Messages.

These capabilities were originally shown on iPhone but will extend to both iPad and Mac. “We look forward to bringing a more personalized Siri to users coming this year,” Cook said, signaling the long wait is over.

More Apple Intelligence Features

Earlier this year, Apple and Google announced that Google Gemini would power future Apple Intelligence features. Exactly which new capabilities arrive in macOS 27 remains unconfirmed, but the integration extends beyond Siri personalization. More details are expected during the keynote.

Touch Interface

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple is preparing a touch-optimized version of macOS for the rumored MacBook Pro or “MacBook Ultra” with a touchscreen. When a user touches a button or control, a menu of relevant commands appears around their finger. Tapping an item in the menu bar enlarges the controls for easier finger selection.

Gurman expects the touchscreen MacBook to launch by early 2027, meaning these changes in macOS 27 may be hidden until the hardware arrives.

Improved Stability

Apple is reportedly focusing on “quality and underlying performance,” drawing comparisons to 2009’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The update is expected to deliver widespread bug fixes, stability improvements, and a refreshed Liquid Glass design language.

No Intel Macs

Last year, Apple confirmed that macOS Tahoe (26) would be the last version to support Intel Macs. macOS 27 will require at least an Apple M1 chip, cutting off all Intel-based machines. Security fixes for older Intel Macs will continue for a few more years, but no new features.

No AirPort Time Capsule Support

Starting with macOS 27, Macs will drop support for AirPort Time Capsule and other legacy storage devices. Users relying on these for backups will need to migrate to modern solutions.

Background

WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) is Apple’s annual event to showcase new software platforms. macOS 26, known as macOS Tahoe, was the last universal version supporting both Intel and Apple Silicon. macOS 27 represents the first pure Apple Silicon release, aligning with Apple’s transition away from Intel processors that began in 2020.

The touch interface rumors have circulated for years, and the Siri overhaul addresses long-standing criticism that Apple’s voice assistant lagged behind competitors. The decision to drop Intel Macs follows Apple’s pattern of aggressively pushing its custom chip roadmap.

What This Means

For users, macOS 27 promises a smarter, more conversational Siri and a forward-looking touch interface—even if the hardware isn’t available yet. Developers will gain new tools to build Apple Intelligence–powered apps, but they must also update code for the Intel Mac cutoff.

Intel Mac owners face an immediate upgrade deadline: to get macOS 27, they must switch to an Apple Silicon Mac. Those holding onto older machines will still receive security patches but miss out on all new features. The removal of AirPort Time Capsule support also signals the end of an era for Apple’s networking hardware.
