In a world that prizes instant gratification, faster is almost always better—except when it comes to artificial intelligence chatbots. A new study presented at the Association for Computing Machinery's CHI'26 conference in Barcelona reveals a counterintuitive truth: users perceive slower AI responses as higher quality. The research, conducted by Felicia Fang-Yi Tan and Professor Oded Nov at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, suggests that a deliberate delay can signal thoughtfulness and earn greater user satisfaction. This finding challenges conventional wisdom about speed and opens the door to a novel design approach known as context-aware latency.
The Experiment: Timing as a Design Variable
To explore how response speed affects user perception, Tan and Nov recruited 240 adults and had them interact with an AI chatbot. Unknown to the participants, the chatbot’s answers were artificially delayed by either two, nine, or twenty seconds. The delay was entirely unrelated to the complexity of the question or the content of the answer—it was a controlled variable. After each interaction, participants rated how much they liked the AI's response.

Slower Responses, Higher Satisfaction
The results were striking: on average, participants preferred the answers that took longer to arrive. The two-second delay felt too quick, while the nine-second delay hit a sweet spot of perceived deliberation. The twenty-second delay, however, sometimes tipped into frustration. The key takeaway is that a moderate pause led users to believe the AI was “thinking” or “deliberating”—qualities we normally attribute to human reasoning. As the researchers note, “people judge AI the way they judge people,” assuming that a slower reply implies more thoughtful consideration.
Designing Deliberate Delays: Positive Friction
Armed with this evidence, the researchers advise developers to abandon a one-size-fits-all response speed. Instead, they propose implementing context-aware latency—a technique they call “positive friction.” Simple questions, such as asking for the weather, should receive near-instant answers. But complex or morally weighty queries—like ethical dilemmas—should feature slight delays that match the gravity of the request. This approach, the researchers argue, would make users happier by reinforcing the illusion that the AI is carefully considering their input.
However, the study also warns of potential pitfalls. If users begin equating longer response times with higher quality, they might place undue trust in a slower system. A separate study published on May 13, 2025, in Frontiers in Computer Science found that emotion plays a surprisingly large role in how users judge chatbots. Researchers Ning Ma, Ruslana Khynevych, Yunqiang Hao, and Yahui Wang discovered that when chatbots employ fake human voices, simulated facial expressions, and chatty language, users form an emotional connection to the AI. This connection enhances what the team calls “cognitive ease”—the mental effort required to interact with the system drops significantly. The result: users find the chatbot easier and more pleasant to use, regardless of its raw intelligence.
What This Means for AI Design
Together, these studies paint a nuanced picture of human-AI interaction. Speed isn't everything—sometimes a thoughtful pause can convey more than a lightning-fast reply. By intentionally slowing down responses to match the emotional weight of a question, designers can foster trust and satisfaction. Similarly, adding human-like cues—voices, faces, conversational tone—can make interactions feel more natural and less cognitively taxing.
Yet there is a delicate balance. The goal should not be to deceive users into overtrusting AI, but to create genuinely better experiences. As the research from CHI'26 suggests, context-aware latency might be a powerful tool—but only if used responsibly. After all, the best AI doesn't just mimic human thought; it respects the user's intelligence as well.
